I used to manage a retail store — long hours, nights, weekends, always on my feet, and honestly, zero future. I didn’t want to be doing that in 10 years.
I stumbled onto Volta Tech School online. The ‘low voltage industry’ wasn’t even on my radar, but the more I read, the more it made sense. I signed up for the access control and CCTV installation course.
Fast-forward a few months: I’m working for a regional integrator doing commercial installs — hospitals, big office buildings, some pretty high-security places. I’ve been up on rooftops, inside server rooms, and behind doors that most people don’t even know exist.
What’s crazy is now I can troubleshoot stuff at home too — I installed my own cameras, set up smart locks, ran cables through the attic. This gave me real skills, not just a paycheck.
It’s the first job where I feel like I’m building a career, not just working a shift
